Solar Energy

Kaemmerlen has achieved an incredible level of depth in this aspect of the burgeoning renewable energy market. This has happened at a fast pace and within a relatively short period of time, which reflects the rapidly growing interest in solar within our local marketplace. It has resulted in learning new technologies and installation techniques for something very different within the construction industry. Gaining expertise in new technology has been rewarding for the field electricians, who are always looking for areas of professional growth.

With the rapid growth, Kaemmerlen has seen more and more projects containing an aspect of renewable energy and more companies were pursuing the installation of a solar array to demonstrate a corporate sensitivity to “green construction.” “Green Construction” has become a national conversation and Kaemmerlen is part of the dialogue locally in St. Louis.

Kaemmerlen works closely with solar integrators and lends its expertise and experience to both the design and installation. This leads to lower installed costs for its clients, and higher production values from the installed solar array.

Systems Capabilities

Voice, Data and Fiber

Kaemmerlen focuses on installation quality and performance. We strive to align ourselves with manufacturers whose certifications that hold a similar approach to their product. Our installation is built to rigid EIA/TIA standards, and we want our clients to feel that they are getting a better/stronger installation with us. Any contractor can install the infrastructure to “work” with their current technology. Our goal is to care about the installed cabling performance meeting a manufacturer’s full performance specifications even if our customers don’t care or understand the future proofing aspect of this stance.

CCTV

We apply a similar rigidity to standards with our installation of infrastructure for Closed Circuit Television Systems (CCTV), keeping current with IP-based and networked solutions.

CATV

A close cousin to the above is a CATV cabling infrastructure. This is for a coaxial or network-based distribution of service. This can either be to support a vendor’s outside plant or satellite -based equipment.

Nurse Call and Healthcare Systems

Due to the long-term involvement of Kaemmerlen Electric with the healthcare industry, Kaemmerlen Communications has a long association with performing work and installing systems that are specific to the medical industry. For hospitals, this goes beyond traditional nurse call systems and includes the many clinical engineering systems related to specific equipment, telemetry or patient record management. Additionally, we have a strong sensitivity and awareness of infectious disease control protocols, which are mission critical to hospitals.

Nursing Homes and Assisted Living Systems

A unique blend of systems integration is needed for these types of facilities. Kaemmerlen Communications has major experience with these types of facilities. There is a strong need for a careful and thoughtful integration of nurse call, patient wandering and access control systems to enhance the functionality of the patient care staff and ensure the well being of the resident clients.

White Noise Sound Masking / Intercom & Paging

The growing appeal of open office design has increased the opportunities for an effective “white noise” generation system. Kaemmerlen can offer a fully integrated IP-based solution that couples white noise with paging and overhead music. In this instance we are aligned with Cambridge Sound Management that allows us to be able to offer the latest technology with cost-effective delivery.

Security / Access Control / Intrusion

Client needs for access control and security have skyrocketed the last few years and technological advances in systems equipment and design have changed dramatically. Kaemmerlen’s relationships with several key providers allows us to integrate a supplier whose system will best fit our client’s needs allowing us to match the right systems, with the right client. With our growing staff of technicians who are dedicated to installing these types of systems, this effort is rapidly becoming a stand-alone division within our Communications Division.

Fire Alarm

Fire alarm expertise is all about meeting the scope requirements of the relevant building codes.  Our skills revolve around cost, and effectively addressing the needs of the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ), including fire marshals and building inspectors.

Audio Visual Installations

Kaemmerlen Communications works closely with many providers of audiovisual systems, and we are relied upon for our ability to provide a great, technical installation. Kaemmerlen can be leaned upon to provide a professional group of technicians with the skills to perform a top-notch installation on board rooms, learning centers, churches and conference centers.

St. Louis Children’s Hospital, East Expansion

One Children's Place
St. Louis, MO 63110

Kaemmerlen is very proud of our history of working with St. Louis Children’s Hospital. Our crowning achievement was the $4M East Expansion which involved splicing a 10-story additional onto the existing facility and adding a wide host of clinical and patient care spaces to the Children’s facility. Kaemmerlen’s attention to details and focus on end user satisfaction led us to the finish line. As part of this job and many subsequent projects, Kaemmerlen feels like we are meaningfully contributing to the improvement of healthcare delivery for kids.

Solae

4300 Duncan Avenue
St Louis, MO 63110

The Solae Company needed a contractor to merge several separate research and design facilities into one state-of-the-art facility, referred to as The Pilot Plant. Calling on Kaemmerlen to lead the charge on the electrical work, this put our design/build skills to the test. With a list of equipment and a rough floor plan, it was our job to sweat the details and make the project happen. With more than 1,000 pieces of equipment later, it did happen—on budget and on time.

City Place 5

Five CityPlace Drive
Creve Coeur, MO 63141

This project was one of several successful City Place projects, although the only Medical Office Building. Applying our experience in the healthcare industry with our design/build skill set, we moved quick to deliver both the building itself as well as the significant surgery center located on the first floor. Moving fast, staying efficient, meeting healthcare industry requirements, and hitting deadlines all took hard work and dedication.

Polsinelli Shughart

100 S. Fourth Street
St. Louis, MO 63102

This fast-paced remodel involved working on five floors of new and existing space for the law firm. Kaemmerlen had to be on all floors at one time, making sure all schedules were met. Finally, keeping a client satisfied while working in their existing space requires a distinct focus on the individual end users — being mindful that we are guests in their “home” while construction is underway.

St. Louis, MO 63102

Over the years, Kaemmerlen as done a lot of tenant finish remodeling for this St. Louis flagship public relations and marketing firm. Frequently needing to work side-by-side with the client’s ongoing operations, our sensitivity to the end user was critical. Not surprisingly, “image” is a big deal for our client and we strived to make sure that their space spoke to professionalism and attention to detail.

Kaemmerlen has been the electrical teammate for this successful and expanding Charter School network in St. Louis. Our relationship started with an very fast expansion of the Preparatory Academy. Doubling the square footage over a short 10-week time frame, we wasted no time in making the project happen. Coordinating our activities with summer class schedules was paramount to a successful effort. Then, our attention shifted to the impressive seven-story structure known as the Beaux Arts Building in the historic Grand Center Arts and Entertainment District. This building had some challenges, including maintaining significant areas with plasterwork and details. Additionally, the transference of several floors from automobile parking to habitable classroom added to the struggle. Final touches included working through the design/build details of a Access Control, CATV, Fire Alarm, Voice, Data, Wireless Networking, Central Paging, and a Wireless Central Clock System. Kaemmerlen was able to make the space functional while maintaining the integrity of the historical nature of the building.

Saint Louis University, Busch Memorial Student Center

20 N. Grand Blvd.
St. Louis, MO 63156

Delays to starting a project and complications with design are fairly typical with construction. However, the end date had zero flexibility as the team needed to deliver the structure for that year’s fall student arrival. The result was a very compressed construction schedule, on a project that had a lot of complicated design issues. The building was a gut renovation of an existing two story building and involved an addition to increase the square footage dramatically. Multiple restaurants, a student cafeteria, a two story ballroom, and multiple retail and function spaces all happened quick. Added to this, the building is the central hub for the major student media organization, including KSLU (radio), SLUTV (cable) and University News (print). Design input came from a vast array of sources and was quickly assimilated into our fast-paced design/build delivery!

This project entailed the extensive interior remodeling and upgrades to these facilities. For starters, this project demanded incredible sensitivity to the existing clients, who shared the worksite with us during this intricate project. Upgrading of the campus-wide fire alarm systems and phone cabling infrastructure, and finish upgrades of multiple areas were all tricky tasks that had to be executed flawlessly. Additionally, multiple small square footage additions were added to the building’s layout in order to provide bedroom configuration changes. This added to the challenges of trying to seamlessly add construction work into the daily affairs of the facilities.

Patients First

901 Patients First Dr.
Washington, MO 63090

Patients First involved adding three-story additions on the east and west sides of an existing hospital, which was sandwiched by the new construction. This splicing of the new additions, construction of a three-level parking garage and an illuminated pedestrian bridge all occurred while the existing hospital was in full operation. Designed and built by Kaemmerlen Electric as a design/build project, including power, fire alarm, lighting and voice/data, the total construction project was completed in an aggressive 12-month schedule with the structure assembled in the winter months. A creek running behind the existing building was rerouted to allow the west building to be built. But most unusual was the fact that the existing building is on a floating foundation with both additions resting on piers. Kaemmerlen installed a new 3,000 amp electric service with a new diesel generator.

The west addition houses a linear accelerator, CT scan, and a full floor operating suite for outpatient surgery. The east addition houses medical office space, a retail conference center, Café Mosaic restaurant and an impressive two-story atrium. The existing building was retrofitted with two MRI suites, a CT scan room, Nuclear Camera room and a relocated Blood Draw suite.

Our technicians and project managers go through extensive EIA/TIA industry standards training in the specification, design and installation of system cabling solutions. These certifications are updated continually per the manufacturer recommendations.

We hold this broad range of certifications in order to provide our customers with a professional installation backed by a warranty certification in almost any cabling brand desired, upon request. All installations are certified and tested with specialized equipment so you can be sure you’re getting a top-tier installation by technicians and managers who know as much about the system components they’re installing as the manufacturers themselves. Any contractor can install any cable, but few contractors can certify, test or even warranty their installation. Rest assured that the cabling system you have invested in will perform to manufacturer performance expectations. Let Kaemmerlen’s experience work for you.

Testing Protocols

We invest in the latest technology to ensure our installations meet or beat manufacturers’ performance specifications. We pay homage to EIA/TIA standards in our quest to honor the clients’ expectations of maximizing bandwidth potential! The testers include:

… on Kaemmerlen being a family business

“It should always feel like you are working with a family business. Whether it’s as a client or as an employee, it is my mission that you feel that you are in a caring environment. This takes a lot of real focus and real action … not just talk. When I go to a job site, I take time to visit each person working there. It is very important to me to thank each of them for the hard work that they do. This may not seem like a big deal, but it is to me.

I remember visiting job sites with my dad when I was much younger and watched how respectful he was to everyone he dealt with … I feel lucky to have had such a good mentor.”

… on the company’s longevity

“The other day I was looking through some of my grandfather’s old stuff. I found a small notebook where he kept wiring diagrams. He wrote them down to help him learn how to be an electrician. The notebook is well worn and dated 1919. Seeing that sort of real life history really gives me a sense of perspective.

I know that he made it through some tough times, even outlasting the Great Depression. I am sure he would have lessons for me during these difficult times our industry is currently facing. I have a hunch that he would make sure I focused on simple things … making sure we were efficient and cost effective … and making sure each client felt great about our relationship.”

… defining leadership

“We did some leadership training in-house for our project managers and key field staff a few years back. The facilitator gave us her definition of what ‘leadership’ meant. She defined it as the ‘ability to develop relationships based upon trust, respect, and credibility.’ Wow! This really resonated with me. It was so simple and easy to get your arms around. From that point forward, I have tried to understand my job description with that mindset.

Each person in our organization can perform like a leader by following this guidepost in developing relationships. All the way down to the green apprentice who is showing up in the industry for the first time with a toolbox of shiny work tools … we all need to be a leader. Everything else will fall into place from there.”

History

A St. Louis Family Company

It began in 1924 on a $300 investment and a vision by founder Thibaut Casper (T.C.) Kaemmerlen. On the third floor of a building, now site of the south leg of the St. Louis Gateway Arch, a company bearing the Kaemmerlen name begins. It accepts and repairs small household electrical appliances. Since its inception, the resulting firm has stood for quality service, personal relationships and vision for its customers.

Stops and turns along the way:

1903 - Founder T.C. Kaemmerlen is born in Mexico, the son of a US railroad company worker transplanted south of the border. Family eventually settles in DeSoto, Mo., when T.C. enrolls at Ranken Technical College and takes first job on assembly line at Frank Adams Electric Company in St. Louis.

1924 - Kaemmerlen and Gil Kramer, T.C.'s foreman at Adams, open Kramer-Kaemmerlen Electric Company on third floor of Second and Chestnut building (site of St. Louis Arch). The firm repairs small electrical appliances.

1927 - First major contract signed to wire grain elevator. Job provides much needed cash flow and encouragement in early years.

1931 - After brief moves to buildings on Lafayette Avenue, company relocates to central city site at 2318 Locust.

1937 - Partnership dissolves. T.C. buys out Kramer. Company officially now Kaemmerlen Electric Company.

1946 - Kaemmerlen Electric incorporates under Missouri laws.

1947 - The big move to current location - 2728 Locust. Shortly after move, addition is built, increasing total space to 12,000-square-feet. Kaemmerlen Electric is accepted in International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local #1 as a closed shop.

1950s - Consumer purchases, especially in home appliances, explodes. Sales boom also brings need for repairs. Kaemmerlen becomes one of largest repair shops in U.S. with 25-plus bench technicians repairing 50,000 appliances annually.

1960s - Commercial service continues development. But mid 60s and early 70s witness greatest growth from the 2-3 man fleet of the past. In 1968, company passes the $1M sales mark for the first time.

1974 - With increasing wages and lower replacement value, small appliance industry shifts from repair to replacement. Kaemmerlen discontinues small household appliance repair, redirecting focus to commercial food service equipment.

1970s - The founder, T.C. Kaemmerlen, turns over day-to-day responsibilities to his sons. The firm successfully transitions to the second generation of leadership.

1987 - March 31 company splits into two corporations - Kaemmerlen Parts and Service (new) and Kaemmerlen Electric. Move streamlines both operations and allows more autonomous leadership by T.C.’s sons Bob and Bruce and in their respective industries.

1996 - Kaemmerlen Communications becomes separate division within Kaemmerlen Electric due to booming market of voice, data and video.

1997 - With increased need for space to grow, Kaemmerlen Electric builds 14,000-square-feet warehouse.

1999 - Kaemmerlen Companies celebrate 75th year of business.

2000 - Robert M. (Bob) Kaemmerlen, Jr. is named president of Kaemmerlen Electric, establishing third generation of leadership.

2004 - The need for office space drives the decision for Kaemmerlen Parts & Service to relocate to a new home; the first move since 1947. Kaemmerlen Electric expands into the vacancy at 2728 Locust, adding an additional 7,000 of square footage to the office.

2006 - The growth and renewed focus on service work leads to the formal creation of a separate business unit, The Service Division.
